Darts in SongTan-Si were started in 1984. A group of dart enthusiasts formed the Skivvy Nine League. This league was opened to members of the 6903rd. Due to the lack of resources, team captains coordinated competition weekly and reserved boards anytime that the lounge was open. The initial response was better than 100 players. This league folded in 1985. During this same time frame, there were two places downtown that darts were played; the Honeymoon Club and the VFW. The Honeymoon club is now the Downtown restaurant. The VFW has moved but is still in existence. In 1986, players from these two establishments met weekly alternating between the two establishments. Numerous discussions followed and based on the encouragement of the Skivvy Nine league a decision was made to create a league downtown. The SongTan-Si Dart Association was formed from these discussions. A competition was held to create an emblem. Ron Strong won the competition and was awarded $25.00 for his effort. This emblem is still used today for the SSDA. Numerous players pounded the ground to get establishments to allow space for dartboards in order to expand the league. The results can be seen today with over ( need entry of clubs ) having dart venues. At one point the league was a combination of the base lounges and the clubs downtown. Today, most of the base lounges no longer exist. Some of the better places to play on base were the Goat, Red Horse and Skivvy Nine. Now, the SSDA is only played downtown. To keep a league in existence that maintains a membership of around 300 players per season is an incredible statistic due to the rotation of personnel through this area. This effort has been accomplished by efforts of the members and officers of the SSDA throughout the years. |
